Gateway National Recreation Area (U.S. National Park Service) in New York - Despite cool temperatures, rolling fog, and the occasional rain shower; Coast Guard Auxiliarist from Flotilla 14-6 braved the elements to serve the public during Safe Boating Week on Staten Island. By 08:00 AM Flotilla members already assembled a camp complete with a large recreational vehicle at the Great Kills Boat Ramp, performing Vessel Examinations, Marine Dealer Visitations and educating public about boating safety.

Logistics for this event were coordinated by Flotilla Commander Tim Barret, and Vice Commander Jeff Caso who worked diligently to make sure a sufficient supply of safe boating literature and VE materials were available despite the shortages in order to complete the mission. Arrangements were also made with U.S. Park Police and National Park Service to bring the Auxiliary vehicles on-site.

The lack of sunshine did not keep all the boaters away; quite a few daring fishermen arrived at the ramp to launch their vessels. Most agreed to have their boats examined, some passed and were issued decals, others were lacking some required items and did not. As per Vice Commander Jeff Caso, “Our goal is to make sure you have what is required, understand the rules and regulations, and most importantly return safely from your trip”.

Not bad for a day’s work, a dozen Auxiliarists showed up to work a gloomy day at the boat ramp. Over 20 Vessel Examinations and a few Marine Dealer visits were performed at the nearby Nichols Great Kills Park Marina. Now that’s what I call a good production. Great Job!
